The Common Luxuries of Life

Because they are common, they are rarely appreciated by most of us.

We see them as normal thing but in the real sense, they are invaluable privileges that we have been enjoying.

Privileges, because some other people are or have not be opportune to enjoy them.


What are these common luxuries?
They are so many but I just want to draw our attention to only a few of them with the hope that you will help me to list the many others.

              So lets take a peep.......

Luxury #1: Freedom of Choice: To be able to choose what to do with your time, what to wear, where to go etc. is a privilege. Don't you think so?

You are reading this piece because you choose to, you have the right to overlook it the first time you saw it and I have no gut to  send policemen to come knocking at your door for doing so.

Ask those that are confined to  wheelchairs, sick beds, most uniformed jobs etc. and they will tell you that you are enjoying a huge privilege.


Luxury #2: Sight: Just shut your eyes for some few minutes and try to figure out what is happening around you............what did you observed?

Of course, your other senses might try to help you to guess but its  quite clear that you will still not arrive at the perfect answer without your eyes wide open.

To see the things around us----- nature, colours, faces of people, on-going actions etc. is a huge luxury.

In fact, you are comfortably reading this piece, all by yourself, just because you can see!

Have you ever imagined what the blind actually goes through?

You just experienced a glimpse of it when you closed your eyes   some few seconds ago...........it is scary!


Luxury #3: Air: As you are reading this piece now, some people are grasping for air on the hospital beds. some others are temporary or permanently under the mercy of Oxygen machine (or whatever they call it)

Imagine that this general air that we breath at will, is a commodity in the market!

like you didn't get me. I said, imagine that you have to buy this air before you can be able to breath everyday.

Such a thought is scary, isn't it?

What a luxury that we have air free off charge!


Luxury #4:  Sleep: Ever rolled on your bed with your eyes wide open all night?
I believe after such an experience, you will have every cause to 'respect' sleep.

To be able to close one's eyes in sleep especially at night is a luxury. Many people are banking on drugs to put them to sleep at night.

What a privilege that you can just close your eyes at  night and off you go!

Luxury #5: Eat: Do you think many people are not finding it difficult to put food  through their throat to their belly?

Believe it. many cannot feed themselves by themselves.
Though hungry, they stares at food like a home video.

Ever felt hungry but yet unable to do justice to your favourite dish set right before you?
If you have been there before, you will understand my gist better.

Many people have to take certain drugs so as to give them the urge to eat food while many others are totally incapacitated by ill health to feed themselves.

So isn't it a privilege that you can eat food whenever you like and at your own will?


Luxury #6: Education: Getting an education, formally or informally, is a privilege.

To be educated means to be informed. Information is life, it gives you an edge over the uninformed. ( that is if you decided to make use of it)

You are better off than most of your peers today because of the education/information you received and put into action. Imagine getting such information many years before now!

Education is a privilege because there many people outside there who are wishing to get education or wished to have gotten it.

Luxury #7: The Bible: The bible is the container of the Word of God. Isn't it a huge privilege to have the very Word of God at our disposal?

Look around you today, there are bible s everywhere, in different forms and types to suit every one. but it was not so in those days.

Ever read the history of the bible? how it came about and the fight for its preservation?

A glimpse through the history of the holy book will help you to appreciate it the more.

And even aside that, having the very Word of God at our finger tips to instruct and direct our lives is an unimaginable luxury.

Hmmmn! what do you have to say about all these common luxuries?
Have we not been overlooking them, talk more of appreciating?

I encourage everyone of us to begin to have a newheart  towards them and the many others. At every given opportunity appreciate God for the opportunity to enjoy them. the more we thank God for these 'seemingly' common luxuries, the more God will introduce into our lives the other luxuries that we give more value to.
